Honda Commercial

It’s official. The Sudanese rap scene Down Under is on fire! Bangs, who became an internet sensation for his “Let me take you to the movies” track, is now the star of a nationally-aired Honda Jazz car commercial.

The theme of the commercial is, How much rap can you fit into a Jazz? and Bangs sings a tailor-made version of his internet  hit about the latest Honda model.

As one commentator put it, the commercial “exemplifies the charming, characteristic Australian awkwardness with black culture”. I’ll let you be the judge.

The Sudanese community is one of the fastest growing communities in Australia. In 2007 it was reported the community grew by almost 35% each year. In ten years approximately 20,000 Sudanese made Australia their new home.

Some have found the adjustment difficult and have encountered hostility from certain elements of the Australian populace. Others, like Mantis, see the country as a land of milk and honey. Mantis released a song last year entitled “I am Australian.”
